Tobacco Farmer and His Dog, Vinales, Cuba

Cuba is a forgotten country! Choked by a dysfunctional revolution and a 56 year-long embargo, the Cuban people have evolved into resilient, proud, intelligent and wonderful neighbors few Americans may ever know…

It is a colorful country, rich in history, culture, music and a “love for life.” The Cuban people have an insatiable curiosity about America including sports and music. In spite of having so little, they will welcome you into their homes and prepare you a meal with whatever little food they have. They want to be with you, talk to you and soak up everything you have to offer. While many do not speak English, they gesture and communicate through their souls and spirit.

These photographs were taken on trips in 2000, 2017 and 2018. Recently, I see important change in Cuba. There are now hundreds of privately-owned restaurants and businesses and people are grasping the concept of capitalism. Cell phones have replaced party lines and people are just beginning to understand the power of the internet. You can sense an impending implosion of drastic change in Cuba and a chance to finally join the rest of the world!
